Lilly, Jays too much for Rays

03/10/2006
Jays at the plate: Shea Hillenbrand went 1-for-2 to raise his Spring Training average to .427. Kevin Barker went 1-for-2 and drove in the Jays' first run. Bengie Molina continued to struggle, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout to drop his average to .117. Non-roster invitee Luis Figueroa had an RBI single.
Rays at the plate: Aubrey Huff went 2-for-2 with a double. B.J. Upton singled and stole a base in two at-bats, but was picked off first base. Joey Gathright had a triple and scored a run.
Jays on the mound: Ted Lilly started for the Jays and allowed two hits and no runs while striking out three. Pete Walker and Scott Downs each pitched a scoreless frame.
Rays on the mound: Edwin Jackson made his second start of the spring, and while he didn't look as overpowering -- he did not strike out a batter -- he retired the first eight batters he faced, running his string to 14 consecutive batters before giving up his first hit of the spring, a third-inning single to Miguel Negron. Jackson then retired the next hitters to finish his outing. Left-hander Mark Malaska did not retire a batter in the sixth, hitting the first batter he faced and walking the second before getting removed. He was charged with two earned runs.
Grapefruit League records: Devil Rays 5-4; Blue Jays 4-7.
